Q: When I'm treating an area of involvement, the degree of impedance is different on different parts of the body. For example, I treated tendonitis of the knee, and in one part I could get a 100 readout on 160 Gain, but in another part I had to raise the Gain to get that readout. Is this usual? Changing the Gain on different placements?

A: Absolutely. It is “normal” to have varying degrees of conductance throughout the body. The Acuscope is monitoring only that tissue which lies between the two probe/electrode contacts at any given moment. Impedance varies widely, especially when there is inflammation.

Theoretically, inflamed tissue will give higher readouts on a lower Gain. However, when an inflammatory condition has existed for a length of time (days, weeks, months, years!) the body has attempted to self-repair for so long that a secondary effect sets in: the area becomes highly congested, and therefore electronically blocked. So readouts may be confusing; indicating chronic resistance even though we are certain that there is underlying inflammation.

The way to address this type of issue is to raise the conductivity
systemically throughout the entire body by addressing AcuPoints along Meridians (PART ONE Treatment Procedures).  You’ll achieve this effect by using 0.5 Hz; then 10 Hz (or 8 Hz at first if the person is exhausted in general and really requires a lot of deep, regenerative rest at the beginning of a series of treatments).

econdly, addressing an area specifically where there is pain (PART TWO) use 0.5 Hz first on combinations of points to see where a "breakthrough" to high readings indicates that you have located tissue with inflammation.  Treat the surrounding tissue with 0.5; then 20 Hz (Low Frequencies) with the Y-Probe or a roller electrode. This is necessary since surrounding areas have been “leeched” of energy, so to speak, because the specific acute area of involvement is so demanding of the micro-electrical currents to heal the injured/inflamed tissue. Once these surrounding areas are “charged up” then one can address the specific acute area of involvement.

Next, going directly to the locations where there were higher readings (showing you the exact location of the tendonitis in the knee, for example) one would “break through" the resistance with 0.5 briefly; manipulating the Gain as needed to do so. Then, as soon as 100+ readouts are achieved, stimulate with 80, 160, and if it is exceptionally inflamed, 320 Hz. Not too much at first, however! A little high frequency goes a long way to give this “damaged” tissue the boost of high frequencies it requires for resolving inflammatory conditions.

Repeat this procedure over time (days, weeks). Don’t try to “fix” it all at once during one session. Normalize the tissue by this process applied very briefly at first; then in treatment session three or four, give it more of both low in the surrounding areas and high in the inflamed area of involvement. In the following treatments, the feedback from 0.5 Hz stimulations will reveal less exceptionally high (excessive) readings and less extremely low (depleted) readings indicating that homeostasis, balance is being restored.  Tissue is repairing itself and the area is returning to normal.

Eventually, take less time applying the treatment procedure; and you will notice that the results are lasting longer (“the cumulative effect”) until the pain and other symptoms have disappeard. Ultimately the goal is to see good readings in all tissue around the area with the first 0.5 stimulations (to no longer see uneven highs and lows in the resulting readings). This may require five to ten (or more) treatments – but it’s worth it!   It could surprise you and happen in only three.  Follow through with a complete series to be sure the job is done.

If you are using the Acuscope Model 80L or the newest Model 80T, you can begin to use the preset AUTO Frequency on Continuous once you are sure about the "zones" where high and low conductivity are located.  This setting allows you to
conduct current through the “heart” of the area of involvement when the Frequency speeds up; and to target the surrounding depleted tissue with the slower (lower) Frequencies when you hear the sound slow down.  You can control the length of time each Frequency runs using Frequency Delay; and you can push the Frequency Reset button (returning back to the beginning of the slower sequence) when the current speeds up if you are dealing with a strictly chronic tissue condition.

Of course, as we know, the instrument is continuously reading the input; comparing it to "healthy tissue norms"; and calculating the appropriate output in order to adjust the waveform patterns being conducted through the tissue.  Be sure to place the Active Electrode over the most highly acute site location when higher (faster) Frequencies are running.

Prior to treating an area in this fashion, apply Pre-Treatment Cream - CRM-PR16. Activate its properties to overcome skin resistance, making the entire surface evenly, highly conductive, using 10 Hz at 50 uA.  Use CEL-0071B or CEL-0231 for treatment.  Then, wash clean with a hot, wet wash cloth.  Wipe dry.  Apply After-Treatment Cream - CRM-FS28, and activate using 10 Hz at 50 uA to restore skin resistance to normal.

Q.  I understand that it is necessary to use a coupling agent that is compatible with this sensitive equipment in order not to compromise the quality of the treatment as it moves through the skin.  However, there are quite a few Creams and Solutions to choose from.  Can you tell me what are the basics that I need for a typical pain management practice?

A. Good question.  There are many specialty creams and solutions developed by the manufacturer for a wide variety of applications.  Here are the ones that are the basic necessities:

- Standard Solution for use with Standard Probes; adheres to the surface of the Tip.  Use for "dip-touch method"

- Runnier Solution for use with Rollers, any moving electrode, Hand Held Bar; Large Plates; Mini-Plates; stays wet longer

CEL-0231 - Solution for use on muscle tissue, especially
with Y-Probe and Rollers

CEL-0072 - Pink (Sensitive) Treatment Cream - use when anyone is obviously sensitive to the microcurrent; add to above solutions if needed

CRM-PR16 - Pre-Treatment Cream

CRM-XR46 - After-Treatment (Body) Cream
CRM-FS28 - After-Treatment (Facial) Cream - popular for bodywork, enriched with nutrients

Q.  Our Patient drives 2.5 hours to see us. That's a long drive for a 1 hour session. What are your thoughts for him for 2 hour sessions? He's done 4 treatments so far; only 1 was a 2 hour session and seemed to go well.

A.  I think that it is perfectly fine to do longer treatments after a patient has had a few normal one-hour sessions.  That way you can spend time using the Acuscope and Myopulse directly on more than one area.  It is great to treat several areas in one treatment.  This would give you more time to be thorough.

Also, in a longer treatment, you can do more Myofascial Tissue Myopulse Massage.  Everyone loves that where-ever it is done; and everyone can use such a treatment on their tight Traps or their strained Scapulae.  Or their low back.  Not to mention, of course, simply a thorough going over each foot, including the Plantar Fascia (bottoms - arches).

It can become a normal type of treatment procedure for some to have longer treatments after they have had at least the first 4 or 5 in a Series of Eleven, as you have learned in the Training Materials how to do them in one hour.  Then, you can tell how they are doing and you can provide even more benefit for them.

It is a good option to do two treatments in one day:  the first one early in the morning; and another later in the day.

Q: I’ve heard that the Acuscope is very effective for relaxation therapy. I have both the ear clips and the headband but I’m not sure how to use them. Can you give me any suggestions?

A: Yes, of course! This is possibly one of the most beneficial treatments for a patient who has pain or is suffering from injury, post-op, acute or any chronic condition because the psychological benefit of stress-reduction/relaxation is as important for healing as the physiological mechanisms.

Trans-cranial (trans-cerebral) micro-current stimulation with the Acuscope is safe, gentle, and provides an opportunity for an individual to experience that state of mind most conducive to activating the body’s self-repair processes.

In fact, following the protocols of THE FOUR PARTS OF A COMPLETE TREATMENT, CES (Cranial Electrical Stimulation) is generally ALWAYS the last part by treatment three or four.

Here are the Acuscope settings:

Mode 1
Intensity: no higher than 200 uA (Intensity in micro-amps); preferably lower. No sensation should be felt or it will be distracting (and indicates more push behind the current than is required by this patient);
Frequency: 8 Hz to relax deeply and possibly drift off to sleep; or,10 Hz to let go of tension and achieve a very relaxed, fully conscious state (use the 10 Hz setting if the patient will be leaving the office and driving a car)
Timer: 12 seconds intermittently (using 0.5 Hz for no more than 5 stimulations while adjusting the Gain (maxiumum readout at the lowest possible Gain setting); and once the Gain is set, turn Frequency to 10 Hz for one more 12 second stimulation to be sure the maximum readout is maintained. Then switch Timer to Continuous; Lower the Volume when feedback is no longer necessary.

Treat for 5, 10, 15, or 20 minutes. No longer.  In fact ideally, after 15 minutes, the Acuscope is simply turned off and the patient is allowed to rest, undisturbed for at least 5 more minutes so that the brainwaves can continue to move on their own in the Alpha frequency range.  This helps the conditioning process.
Take patient comfort and air quality into careful consideration.  Be sure to cover with a blanket in cold weather.  Suggest breathing techniques to release tension and/or Progressive Muscles Relaxation.  Visualization of natural scenery is also very effective when attempting to quiet the mind. Encourage the patient to simply let go of all distressing and distracting thoughts for awhile. Relaxation requires practice. Conditioning is developed over time. Before the patient leaves your office, discuss the benefits of practicing often. Daily Power Naps are recommended. Prescribing the home use of a NEUROSCOPE may be recommended towards the last few treatments in a Series of Eleven.

It is HIGHLY PREFERABLE to offer stress reduction therapy in a room that is conducive to being relaxed. The Green Oasis environment, is ideal: a room filled with fresh air to breathe where Oxygen is provided by live green, leafy plants; Full-Spectrum Lighting to reduce glare and eye strain; video and photography depicting nature and natural scenery; a waterfall; ambient sounds of nature and/or New Age music. Possibly Aroma Therapy.  Provide a comfortable chair (but NOT ELECTRONIC or the electro-magnetic field of the wall current powering the chair will interfere with the Acuscope’s ability to address the subtle micro-currents traveling through the brain).

The Ear Clips – place gently on the earlobes after generously applying Electrolyte Solution CEL-0144 to the fronts and backs of both earlobes.

The Head Band – attach the two accessory cords over the cups of choice: frontals, temples, or mastoids. Be sure to fill cups with enough Electrolyte CEL-0144 to make good contact, but not drip. Have patient bend head forward while you position the band; then, they can press their fingers over the cups while you fasten the Velcro.  Can be worn comfortably if not pulled too tight.

Overview of the Basics of Stress Relief Therapy with the Acuscope:

WHO NEEDS IT? – Anyone with stress . . . isn’t that everyone in the world today? Especially those whose tension and anxiety is influencing their condition – making it worse and more difficult for the body to heal itself. Tension headaches are highly responsive to this therapy.

WHAT IS IT? – Trans-cranial micro-current therapy with the Acuscope causes the brainwaves to entrain to (conform, mimic, follow the form of) an Alpha frequency pattern while in treatment mode. This enables the patient to experience the feeling of relaxation, releasing tension in the mind, distributing relaxing waveform signals throughout the body via the Central Nervous System to the Peripheral Nerves. It can be a way for a patient to learn how to feel relaxed; and if instructed properly in breathing and other relaxation techniques, the individual can then reach this relaxed state on his/her own, at will.

WHEN TO DO IT? – Relaxation Treatments can be administered before OR after other types of therapy such as manual adjustment, massage, ultrasound – but NOT ever in conjunction with any other electrical stimulation (exception: can be following the use of the Acuscope’s companion instrument for soft tissue treatment, the Myopulse). A patient should have this trans-cerebral Acuscope treatment each time they come in for an appointment. It is considered PART FOUR of a Complete Treatment.

After undergoing a complete series of sessions for pain management therapy; then, it can be part of a wellness maintenance schedule, once per day, once or several times per week, then, finally, once or twice monthly thereafter.  Many patients enjoy the Neuroscope to maintain a daily regimen of "Rest-Relax-Recharge" in the morning, afternoon, or evening.

WHERE TO DO IT? – Relaxation Treatments in a health-care practice are best administered in a Green Oasis, full of fresh air and natural scenery, free of interfering milli-amperage electronic equipment.  Even in a typical medical office environment, one treatment room can be filled with live plants and full-spectrum lighting, no matter how small!

WHY DO IT? – Trans-cranial microcurrent Relaxation Treatments will enhance the overall electro-chemical ability of a body to repair itself by adjusting the type of signals generated by the brain. It’s like pushing re-start on a computer, after “clearing the cache.” As seen on an electro-encephalograph, Alpha brainwave patterns indicate a state of mental relaxation. After trans-cerebral Acuscope treatment, PET scans have indicated a relaxation response.   Here i
s an example.   Ample medical/scientific research has shown that a relaxed state of mind promotes healing.

Q: Do the footplates actually give treatment or are they merely for monitoring (when placed under the soles of the feet) when used in conjunction with a probe or mini-plates or a roller?

A: Whenever ANY electrode is plugged into the Reference (Blue Ring Jack)
Outlet of the Acuscope or Myopulse, they are monitoring AND reflecting the treatment being delivered into the site where the Active electrode is placed.

The difference is in the size of the area of surface contact.  The Large Plates (used with the Junction Box), provide a more generalized (dispersive) neurological reference acquired bi-laterally when using the Acuscope.  With the Myopulse, a single Large Plate (used with the Junction Bar), providing a broad reference to a particular area of connective tissue. If a mini-plate is used, or a probe is placed in the Reference (Blue Ring) outlet, it is a more precise, specific reference.

There is really no such thing as “merely monitoring” during treatment with this equipment.

While in Feedback mode, the Acuscope monitors and gives you (the operator and the patient) readouts that are informative (sound and numbers). During treatment phase, it continuously calculates its output based on the biofeedback from the tissue.

Regardless of the choice of electrodes/probes, both points of contact are actively conducting current into and through the tissue. As you know, the polarity alternates. Each probe alternately becomes the positive; then the negative; then the positive, etc. causing the current to flow back-and-forth, back-and-forth. This is why it is known as “polarity reversing” alternating current.

However, the key thing to understand is that when the Active Electrode is placed over the site of injury, or on the location where change is desired, the reading is picked up from and sent in to this location. The Reference Electrode provides a location to pull and push the current to and from the site where the Active probe is located.  Placement of electrodes should be chosen accordingly.

In other words, during treatment, as the current moves in one direction (into the tissue), a corrective influence is delivered into the site under the Active electrode.  When the Polarity reverses, and the current moves in the other direction (from the body back into the instrument) it is picking up the biofeedback required to calculate it's next corrective signal.

Like a missile guidance system, it continuously self-corrects until the target is reached.  The goal, of course, is a normal cellular response indicating a healthy tissue condition.

New Patient-Owner Question:

Q:  This evening has beenvery uncomfortable, have taken 4 aspirin, so have not done a treatmenttonight.   It is my 4thday using the Acuscope.  What do yousuggest? What does this mean?

A:  One thing I have learnedis that the microcurrent begins to move electrons through nerve cells that havebeen lying dormant for some time.  Often certain ones have been in a stateof excitable excess within the same area of tissue as the result of some longago damage.

When dormant nerve cellsawaken, and overly active cells receive a boost, the self-repair mechanisms areactivated to an intensified degree.  When that happens, the feeling of theperson within who's body this is occurring, may be interpreted as "thepain is worse."  So be it.  This is the time to back away for abit and allow the body to do some work with this new supply of “energy” havingthe comfort of knowing that this intensified activity is required to resolveold issues.  If anything, treat distally - which means, far away from the pain site.

In comparison, when an injury has justoccurred, it is another story that we will talk about; and for you to alsounderstand.  Imagine, say, you "pull a muscle" running on thebeach from a mis-step - or suddenly feel an unforseen strain of a muscle-tendon-ligament groupduring a Yoga Position. Or, the unexpected fall, or car accident happens. This would be a new-acute injury.  These can resolve quickly with the help of Acuscope&Myopulse.  The body immediately goes into gear doing the repair work it is naturally programmed to do. Themicrocurrent causes accelerated tissue repair; and it results in preventinglingering effects that complicate the return to complete healthy resolution.

You, however, right now have some old damageto deal with.  Probably recently re-injured to some degree.  Pleasebe patient.  Have faith that your cells are capable of repair.

I would also like totalk to you about the value of inversion.  A slant-board and invertedPostures (without placing pressure on the head . . . no headstands for now!) are so very beneficial for blood flow and lymph circulation.  Iam so glad that you have been using a slant board all along.

Now, when you arelying there, with your head lower than your feet, blood flowing to your brain, I would like to ask you to imagine the lines of currents moving from your toes/feet/anklesall the way up the legs; as well as the fingers/hands/wrists all the way up thearms.  You might, if you are very self-aware, discover where the currentflow is blocked.   Use your mind to look within.  Imagination can assist you to see the Nervous System and the AcuPoints and Meridian Lines.  Asyou are breathing, see if you can trace each of the 12 Meridians.  The 6 from yourtoes up to your neck-head-face; and the 6 starting from your fingers.  I find this helps to increase thebenefit from the Acuscope; and it develops accuracy in Probe Tip placement.

Then, you can use theAcuscope to release the resistance; overcome the obstruction(s); andrecondition the nerves to flow evenly as the neurons fire along the neural network, throughout the Nervous System.

 This is the Goal.

Next Question:

Q:  What about the footplates?  Do I need to put electrolyte solution all overthem before I do my treatment tomorrow morning?

Electrolyte SolutionCEL-0071B is runnier and more liquid.

Place each foot on its plate (placed evenly, hip width apart) and look at the contour of your foot.

Drip drops of Solution directlyunder where the foot will be touching.

Feel the wetness as you move your feet slightly; and besure it stays wet and movable.

If it dries, (sticky feeling) add a bitmore solution.

If it dries again, use afine spray of natural spring water to re-wet.

With the Large FootPlates (+Box) under feet.

Use Hand Held Bar ineach hand separately.   Here's how:

Frequency - 0.5 Hz; bothsides, one side at a time; 5 minutes

then 10 Hz; both sides. one side at a time; 5 minutes

Clarification:  oneside at ½ cycle; other side at ½ cycle.

Then, each side at 10Frequency

Use CEL-0071B in Hands.

IMPORTANT!  Keep fingertips dry topress Start Button and change instrument settings (dials and buttons).  Do not touch instrument or Probe buttons/dials with Solution!

Follow this Treatment Procedure:

Keep lowering the Gainas you see readouts indicating improved conductivity;  notice that readouts will keep improving while using 0.5 cycles per second; check after one minute, 5 times.

When it is a good as it can be for up to 5 minutes on 0.5; then, switch to 10 Hz.  Leave the Gain as is wherever readouts persist at maximum and holding.

Let the Acuscope run on Continuous at 10 Hz while you are feeling very comfortable andrelaxed.  (Use 8 Hz instead if you feel that you are in need of regenerative rest; or in the evening when bedtime is near.)

All during treatment, always be taking long, easy, diaphragmatic breaths to supply Oxygen tothe cells.  Empty slowly, completely;  fill gradually.  Keep lifting your mind as you inhale.  Nothing is forced.

Sip water intermittently through the treatment.

Think about thebroadband microcurrents washing away erratic frequencies throughout yourbody.

[Leave your head-neck-face alonefor the moment.]

Smile alot!  Let the action of smiling lift your head (brain-face) up off of your neck and shoulders.

Drop shoulders back and down.  Release chest constriction to open your heart cavity.

Do your best to keepyour neck, shoulder, and upper back muscles relaxed.  Let go of anytension you can detect.

Try not to take painsuppressing medicines to block out what you are feeling.

Be as quietas you can during this time.  Sit out in nature as much aspossible.  Walk.  Breathe.

Sip water all day.

Have fruitjuices and coconut juice in the mornings.  Be sure to ingest live, green, red, orange colored vegetables from noon on to early evening.  Bedone eating by nightfall.  Sleep without food digesting in yourDigestive Tract.  Avoid alcohol.

Vitamins andHerbs – up to you.  Use your own best advice on this and adhere toyour highest principles of nutrition.

We will see what your spinereadings tell us when we meet on Skype.

Q:  Both the Acuscope (Clinical Models 80L and 80T) AND all of the Myopulses have an AUTO Frequency setting.  Are they different?  How are they used?
